Internet Research

From my Internet research of the history of soaps and existing soaps today I found that the main, original target audience is the 'stay-at-home' housewife, who have time at the end of their day to sit down and watch the television. This seems to be in addition to women in their early teens to mid-20s.

Today, the most well known soaps such as EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale are aimed at an audience between the ages of 18 to 50, all females. Males do not seem to be the target audience for any soap operas. These soaps, with a wide range of target audience, include many different types and ages of character and cover many different story lines following them all. However, different soap operas have different target audiences. Hollyoaks, for example, uses more exclusive, less well covered story lines, more aimed at a younger audience, within the bracket of 16-24 year olds. Hollyoaks follows a group of young people, leaving school and getting jobs, suggesting that the target audience like to watch people in a similar situation to them.
