Trailer- Props

 Mobile phone:
The use of the mobile phone prop with the characters Jessie and Billy signify that there is a relationship building between them. It is unclear to the audience what that relationship is, but as it cuts between the two scenes they are both holding a phone, which makes the audience assume that they are messaging each other.

Elizabeths notebook:
Elizabeth's notebook covered in Zacs name creates the connection between the two characters. Using an eyeline match between the group and Elizabeth show that she has an interest in one of them. The use of the notebook hammers home this interest and shows the reader that it is Zac who she is looking at. The notebook is created very stereotypically. The use of pink and red colour connotes the feeling on love, showing she has a crush on Zac. The use of this prop in this stereotypical way may enable to the audience to relate to the character of Elizabeth.

Trailer- Costumes

Laura Bayne as Elizabeth:
We wanted the costume of Elizabeth to be as plain as possible. A black jumper, white shirt and jeans gives a cross a 'nerd' stereotype. The costume clearly relays this and helps the audience to understand the role of her character. This is also seen in the use of her glasses as a prop. The costume shows she is dull and boring, the costume would not make her stand out in a crowd.

 Clarissa Bowers as Jessie:
 The costume of Jessie needed to be girl, but neutral at the same time. Because she is a very mysterious character we didn't want to give too much away about her just from the trailer. The plain coloured hoodie, jeans and boots shows that she is stereotypical teenage. The way she is dressed signifies that Jessie is laid back about life.

Thomas Bell as Ryan:
The costume of Ryan also connotes to the audience that he is very laid back. The checked shirt, jeans and trainers signify that he is a stereotypical teenage who doesn't put much thought into an outfit. We wanted to show him as sporty (through the skater trainers) but be in an outfit that would blend in behind the main character of Zac.

David Mills as Zac:
Zacs costume signifies that he is a very stereotypical male teenager. The hoodie, jeans and trainers indicate that he is sporty and has a relaxed view on life. We needed the costume to put across the personality of Zac, one that takes each day as it comes, he is very casual and doesn't get stressed out by much.

Eleanor Todd as Sarah:
The costume of Sarah is very plain and simple, one that you would expect from a teenager. This is something that the audience could relate to. The plain white cardigan combined with the orange shirt and shoes show that she is trying to fit in, but the consistent use of orange portrays her bright and happy personality.

Thomas Field as Billy:
The costume is Billy is very neutral and doesn't give much away. As Billy is the mystery character at the end of the trailer we didn't want to portray much of his personality in the trailer. The coat, white jumper and brown trousers keep his character very neutral and plain, therefore he keeps the theme of mystery as the audience can't make a connection with him. It is not clear which stereotype he belongs to, unlike the other characters.

Trailer- Possible music tracks

To go over the top of our trailer we are going to use a piece of non-digetic music. This will act as an instantly recognisable piece of music that the audience immediately associates with Hatton Park.
The piece of music needs to have as little lyrics as possible, instrumental tracks are best, along with those with a long introduction before any vocals. This way the attention of the viewer will be solely on the action in the trailer. The dialogue will also be heard clearer this way. The track needs to have a long introduction as most of the dialogue is at the beginning of the trailer. Therefore there won't be as  much lyrics in the song at the same time as the dialogue. Our trailer will be around 1 minute long so the song needs to build enough for that length of time. We need the track to be something that appeals to our target audience, which will help to gain interest for Hatton Park.

After researching current artists, I came up with a shortlist. From this I was able to analyse them further and get some target audience feedback.

M83- Midnight city

Lyrics start at 0:38. Builds in between quickly. Chorus ends at 1:14.
Mysterious and quite fast paced, would suitably build the tension.

One Direction- One thing (instrumental version)

In the original version the lyrics start at 0:04 so it would be very hard to hear the dialogue in the trailer, there would be too much going on.
The instrumental version is at a steady pace, may be too upbeat and happy for our trailer.

Razor Light- Before I fall to pieces

Lyrics start at 0:28. Builds with vocals to a chorus that ends at 1:59.
Maybe too fast paced and not mysterious enough to create the effect we want.

MGMT- Kids

Builds with the noise of children until 0:07, this would not be suitable for the trailer as it is very overpowering.
However the lyrics in the song are not very loud, meaning it wouldn't be too overpowering. There is an intro until 0:39, before vocals are heard. This would fit in before any of the dialogue begins. It has a steady beat which would fit in with the tempo of the trailer.

The Libertines- Don't look back into the sun

Intro to vocal at 0:40, long intro would work well before dialogue fits in. Pace builds which would go well with the tempo of the trailer. However, it gets very fast, may not fit with the theme of mystery.

The Kaiser Chiefs- Born to be a dancer

Lyrics start at 0:34, starts of quite slowly, which may be too slow for the trailer. Would keep the mystery theme about it. Lyrics also fit in with the themes explored. First chorus that ends at 1:14.

Trailer- Locations

Location ONE:
Jessie and teacher, Sarah waiting for her outside.

This location would work well as it has a window next to the door. This would be most effective as the trailer cuts to Sarah waiting for Jessie outside. Sarah could be placed to the left, in front of the door, and the camera would still be able to see Jessie and the teacher sitting at the desk inside. As it is the first scene of the trailer we need to to be obvious to the viewer that it is a classroom, this location would do that. Composition of the scenes would be very important if this location was chosen. Angles of the camera would be very important to get all the scene in and everything we want to shown. The only disadvantage of using this location is that it is on a very busy corridor and it is a well used room. We would have to plan carefully the times of when the room is available to us to use.

This is a similar location to the first one however it is in a bigger corridor area. This means it would be better suited as we could experiment more with shot types, angles and composition to get the best shots possible. We could be able to keep the looking through the window of Sarah whilst she waits for Jessie but try it at different camera distances and shot types to make it most effective.

Location TWO:
Jessie/Sarah and Zac/Ryan, Elizabeth looks on in the distance.

This location would be very suitable for this scene. It is a large corridor area meaning it would be very effective for when Jessie and Sarah walk in to meet Zac and Ryan. The large area also means it would create a good pan sequence for when Elizabeth is looking on in the background. The main benefits is that it is so large, many different compositions of the scene could be tried on, with camera distance being important to show the relationships between the characters and who takes up most of the screen. The only real disadvantage is availability of the area, as it is very busy. We would have to plan the filming schedule according to the school timetable.

This location would show the divide between the group of characters. The four main characters could be placed on bottom two steps talking to each other, with Elizabeth at the top of the flight of stairs. This would show her looking over the group, signifying that she is in some sort of position of power. However,  using a flight of stairs would be very difficult to film around, as it would be hard to compose the shots how we want them. It is a very small area to work within. It is also very busy so it would be hard to get an available time to film here.

Location THREE:
Billy

This location would work well for the character of Billy as it would also connote his personality. It is obvious that the location is a library, having Billy located here would give off the connotations that he is more of a nerd and an outcast as he sits on his own in the library. Billy could easily be sat at a table surrounded by books, on his own. The only disadvantage of the location is that it is a busy place, so there might not be much availability to film, as we want him to be completely isolated and on his own.

This location would be suitable for Billy as it would show him completely on his own. As we want him to be in a completely different place to the other characters, having him outside would give this affect. Billy could be placed at the benches, with no other people sitting on the other benches, signifying that he is on his own and therefore connoting he doesn't have many friends. However, a disadvantage of this location is that it is not obvious that it is within the school, therefore not showing the complete idea of the plot.

This could be a possible location for Billy. It is a very isolated area where not many people sit, therefore it would have good availability to make use of. The small tables could be covered in props of books, with Billy sitting in the corner on his own. The only disadvantage of this location is that the tables and the seating is very low, therefore it may be difficult to get good composition of the shot, showing everything we want to show, whilst emphasising the fact Billy is on his own.

Trailer- Final plot

After getting together with the other members of my group we were able to share ideas and combine them together. We then finalised a plot outline together, which we would then be able to develop into a script, storyboard and shot list, ready for filming.

Plot:

- Jessie with teacher in classroom. (dialogue)
- Sarah stands outside classroom, waiting for Jessie.
- Jessie comes out of room and moans to Sarah about teacher. (dialogue)
- Cut to Zac and Ryan, talking about sport. (dialogue)
- Jessie and Sarah enter scene, Zac and Jessies relationship is clear.
- Pan round to Elizabeth, standing outside classroom with her back against the wall..
- Over Elizabeths shoulder she unfolds a piece of paper with Zac's picture on.
- Pans back to Zac and Jessie. Jessie leaves conversation to get her phone out of her pocket. (dialogue)
- Jessie recieves a new text, she seems worried about this.
- Cuts to Billy outside of school, sitting with his phone.
- Short cuts between each of the characters to show reactions, close ups of faces.
- Screen fades to black to show 'Hatton Park' logo, name, date and time of soap.

Final directions the characters are looking in. Signifying:

-Jessie and Billys relationship

-Zac and Jessie, with Billy getting in between

-Elizabeths crush on Zac

-Ryan and Sarah

-Sarah advertising new soap, looking at logo

-Sarah looking over at Elizabeth, suspicion.

This layout works better with the route of the eye. It starts on the most important character, Jessie, who is at the centre of most storylines. It then goes through Billy and Zac who are also important to the soap. It then goes through the logo, which begins to create the brand of the soap 'Hatton Park'. It also goes through Ryan, who may be important to the storylines. It then finishes in the terminal optical area, with the slogan and date, time and channel the soap is being shown on. The most important thing the viewer needs to fnish reading.

Poster- Planning for photography

For the poster I will ensure that all of the characters are wearing the same costumes as in the other photographs and filming. In all the products I produce having the characters in the same costumes will ensure the audience can make connections between the characters and products. The poster and magazine cover will need to go hand in hand with each other to ensure the audience can join the two together and remember the characters.

I will take 3 photographs of each of the characters- a total of 18 photographs. Taking these photographs in advance will enable me to create the best product possible when editing and constructing the poster. Of each character I will take a photo of them looking left, looking right and looking up (see draft layouts). Each of the photos will be a close up of the character, of just the shoulders and head. This way the audience will be able to easily see facial expressions of the characters, these then connote what the characters may be feeling and thinking.

Poster- Sample fonts

The font for the tag line/slogan on the poster with either be in a handwriting style font, to make it look like its been written on, like its on a whiteboard at school, or in a stamped style, to look like its been stamped on with a rubber stamp, like how classwork gets marked, if done badly. All this connotes the idea of the soap being set at school, dealing with stereotypical teenage school issues.

Each box will have a close-up shot of the named character with in it. It will be from shoulders upwards, so you will still be able to see their school uniform which helps to give the viewer some idea of what the advertised soap will be about.

Each character shown on the poster will be looking or interacting with another character in some way. This will show the relationships between them and help to hint at storylines that would be explored without giving the plot away. For example: Zac will be looking upwards, straight at Jessie- his girlfriend. Elizabeth will be looking towards the left, at Zac, implying that she likes him. Jessie will have a worried expression on her face as she looks slightly towards the right at Billy. Sarah and Ryan will both be looking into the direction of their respective best friends.
